4 Signs a Tree Needs to Be Removed

Feb 17, 2024

Have you noticed that one of the trees in your yard looks a little worse for wear? Maybe some of the branches are dying or it's leaning to one side. Tree problems tend to get worse over time if left untreated, so it's important to evaluate whether your tree needs to be removed. According to Treehugger, in the United States, there are an estimated 228 billion trees. Undoubtedly, a number of those trees might be ailing and need to be removed. Here are four signs to look out for when determining if a tree should come down.

1. Branches Are Dying or Breaking

If you notice dead branches or ones that snap off with just a little pressure, your tree's health is likely in decline. Dying branches indicate the tree isn’t getting enough nutrients or water to thrive. As more branches die, it becomes more of a hazard due to falling debris. In extreme cases, there is even the risk of the entire tree falling over if it becomes too lopsided. If more than a third of your tree appears dead or unhealthy, removal is likely the best option.

2. Noticeable Leaning or Movement

Trees naturally move a bit in the wind. However, if your tree sways dramatically back and forth or seems permanently lopsided, something's definitely wrong. This shifting indicates structural instability in the roots or trunk. With poor structural integrity, strong winds or storms can more easily knock the tree down. That brings the risk of property damage or worse. Tree removal services are the safest solution here.

3. Signs of Pests or Disease

Are there holes in the bark or spots that look chewed up? This points to pests like beetles or caterpillars living inside and feeding on the tree. Fungal growths, mushrooms near the base, black spots, or oozing liquid are indicators of disease. In a pest or disease-infested tree, the problem continues spreading until the entire tree is overwhelmed. At that point, there’s no saving the tree, so removal prevents further spread.

4. Root Problems Above Ground

Under the soil, damaged roots limit the tree's stability. However, you can also spot signs above ground too. Lifting sidewalks, crimped curbs, and uneven ground can all mean roots are growing where they shouldn't be. This damages surrounding items like fences or buildings. Getting tree removal services as soon as these issues emerge can prevent further destruction. Remove the tree before the problem roots spread any further.
